History for Lunch is sponsored by Andy Friedman, Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Georgetown, SC

The unique talent that Harper Bond shared with Georgetown around 1900 will be revealed in a fascinating and visual presentation followed by the viewing of this recently acquired and important acquisition to the maritime museum – an aerial view of Georgetown painted by Harper Bond as part of the display for the Georgetown booth at the Charleston Exposition of 1902.

Paige Sawyer is a native South Carolinian, a Georgetown photographer, a naturalist on the Carolina Rover and an avid student of history. He taught photography classes at Coastal Carolina in Georgetown many years before OLLI came along (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) and through OLLI today continues the same along with offering walking and harbor history tours of Georgetown. Paige is married to the former Susan McDaniel and they are parents of two Citadel graduates and much prouder grandparents of a ninth generation South Carolinian grandson.

7th Annual Burning of the Socks and Gumbo Cookoff @ South Carolina Maritime Museum
Mar 22 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

7th Annual Burning of the Socks features a Gumbo Cookoff

The South Carolina Maritime Museum invites you to usher in the coming of spring and the arrival of boating season at the 7th Annual Burning of the Socks on Thursday, March 22, 2018 from 5:30 pm until 8:30 pm.

In addition to the sock burning festivities, there will be a Gumbo Cookoff with Georgetown restaurants competing: Al Fresco, 700 Modern Bar and Grill, Ball & Que, Big Tuna, Buzz’s Roost, Harborside, Rollin Local and River Room.

There will also be raffles and door prizes, beer, wine, liquor, and live music by Solid Country Gold.

The Burning of the Socks tradition began in the mid-1980s at a boatyard in Annapolis, Maryland. There, Captain Bob Turner, who managed the boatyard, got tired of winter weather. While working on boats all winter, his socks collected sawdust, bottom paint, caulk, and other boatyard leavings. In other words, his socks would stand up when he took them off at night. One year, on the first day of Spring, he took off his socks, put them in a paint tray, sprinkled on some lighter fluid, lit them, and then had a beer to celebrate. And so the tradition began, and there are now sock burnings in coastal communities across the country.

Tickets for this “fun”raiser are $30 for museum members and $35 for non (but soon-to-be) members. All proceeds will benefit the SC Maritime Museum.

History for Lunch - Blackbeard & the Queen Anne's Revenge @ South Carolina Maritime Museum | Georgetown | South Carolina | United States

The Queen Anne’s Revenge will be presented by David Moore, Curator of Nautical Archaeology-NC Maritime Museum-Beaufort/Queen Anne’s Revenge Project.

A native of North Carolina, David Moore has had an interesting and adventurous career as a nautical archaeologist for over 35 years. David received his bachelor’s degree from UNC-Wilmington and his master’s degree in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University. It was during his time at ECU that he became interested in the whereabouts of Blackbeard’s most famous ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Ultimately, the ship was discovered in 1996 utilizing David’s research. David has investigated the wrecks of over 300 ships, ranging in date from the 16th-19th centuries, including the historically significant 17th century slave ship Henrietta Marie. For many years, he investigated and excavated shipwrecks in Florida. David is currently the Curator of Nautical Archaeology at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and subject-matter expert on the Queen Anne’s Revenge Project.

History for Lunch – The Fossils of South Carolina @ South Carolina Maritime Museum
Dec 5 @ 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm
History for Lunch - The Fossils of South Carolina @ South Carolina Maritime Museum | Georgetown | South Carolina | United States

“The Fossils of South Carolina” will be presented by Matt Gibson, Curator of Natural History, The Charleston Museum, in conjunction with the SC Maritime Museum’s new exhibit “Beneath  Dark Waters: The Fossil Discoveries of South Carolina’s Lowcountry Waterways.”

Matt Gibson has harbored an interest in extinct animals and fossils ever since he was a child growing up in Georgia. This fascination with prehistoric animals continued to develop, ultimately leading to his decision to attend Georgia Southern University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Geology and a minor in Biology. Matt then attended graduate school at East Tennessee State University, receiving a Master of Science in Biology, with a concentration in Paleontology. He also has a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Secondary Science Education, also from Georgia Southern.

Professionally, Matt has had an extensive and interesting career. He served as a museum docent while attending Georgia Southern; was a graduate and lab assistant during his time at both graduate schools; has been a team member at numerous fossil excavations in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee; served as a marine mammal research assistant at the Smithsonian; taught high school biology and chemistry; and most recently, has been the Curator of Natural History at The Charleston Museum since 2014.

Matt has a soft spot for mosasaurs, a giant marine reptile that went extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs. Matt’s dream fossil excavation destination would take him to either Argentina or Mongolia.

History for Lunch – International Shipwreck Diving @ South Carolina Maritime Museum
Feb 20 @ 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

Please join us Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at noon to explore the “Mt. Everest of wreck diving”, the Andrea Doria, with veteran shipwreck diver Pete Manchee.

The Andrea Doria. A name that conjures up images of elegance, mystery, danger, and tragedy. The Andrea Doria, dubbed “a floating art gallery”,  was a glamorous ship known for its beauty and style in the twilight years of the classic ocean liners.

On the night of July 25, 1956, the Swedish passenger ship Stockholm collided with the Andrea Doria 50 miles south of Nantucket as the Andrea Doria made her approach into New York. The collision was fatal for the Italian liner. The AndreaDoria eventfully went to the bottom of the Atlantic eleven hours after the collision on July 26, 1956, sinking in approximately 230′ of water.
Due to its depth, the wreck of the Andrea Doria has challenged even the most experienced divers. Considered by many in the diving community to be too dangerous, the Andrea Doria has been a magnet over the years for divers with a desire to test their skills, a thirst for adventure, and a quest to recover the precious artifacts waiting to be discovered deep inside the wreck.
