Learn more about the H.L. Hunley Submarine Project with Johanna Rivera-Diaz, Conservator Adjunct Professor of Historic Preservation.

With her extensive background in museum and conservation/restoration work in the United States, Chile, and abroad, Johanna Rivera-Diaz joined the H.L. Hunley Submarine Project at the Warren Lasch Conservation Lab (Charleston, SC) in 2005. Assisting in the excavation of artifacts from the Hunley, her work includes the conservation and treatment of marine archaeological artifacts associated with the Civil War submarine. Johanna is manager of the Hunley collection, including photographing and cataloging artifacts. Currently, Johanna and her colleagues are conducting de-concretion work on the submarine’s hull in preparation of the Hunley’s eventual move to a permanent museum setting.
