History for Lunch – South Carolina Shipwrecks @ South Carolina Maritime Museum
Jan 24 @ 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

On the bottom of the ocean off of South Carolina’s coast and along the banks of its many rivers are resting places for  hundreds of shipwrecks. Artifacts collected by divers, beautiful ship models and historic photographic images tell fascinating tales of war, storm, collision and neglect at South Carolina Maritime Museum’s Shipwrecks exhibit.

This exhibit will be the focus of the January 24, 2018 History for Lunch talk. The presenter will be Pete Manchee, who personally dived on many of the wrecks and donated many of the artifacts for this exhibit.

$20 for Lunch and Presentation
$18 for Museum and OLLI Members

7th Annual Burning of the Socks

How to beat the winter blahs

You haven’t been on your boat (or on the links, or in the surf, etc.) since before Christmas. Tension is mounting, and you have little energy within you. You are eating more to relieve your stress. One effective way to lower these blahs, according to psychologists, is to relax. But the very best way to re-energize and increase your optimism is to BURN YOUR WINTER SOCKS.

How’s that?

Yes, you can both eat more and relax at the same time by burning your winter socks at the South Carolina Maritime Museum’s  “Burning of the Socks” celebration on Thursday, March 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, on the waterfront at 729 Front Street in Georgetown.

The event is a “fun”draiser for the museum, and you will be treated to delicious hors’doeuvres, Cajun gumbo (seafood and landlubber styles), beer, wine, liquor, live music, and door prizes. The cost is only $25 each for members, $30 for non- (but soon to be) members. Tickets can be purchased at the Museum or online HERE.  For any questions, call 843-520-0111.

But what’s the burning of the socks all about?

It’s become a coastal tradition, dating back to the mid-1980’s, starting in Annapolis. There, Bob Turner, who managed a boatyard, got tired of the winter blahs. While working on boats all winter, his socks collected sawdust, bottom paint, caulk, fiberglas resins, and other boat yard leavings. In other words, his socks would stand up when he took them off at night. One year, on the first day of Spring, he took off his socks, put them in a paint tray, sprinkled on some lighter fluid, lit them, and then had a beer to celebrate. The tradition began.

There are now sock burnings in other boating towns across the country. This will be the 7th annual in Georgetown and Captain Bob Turner, who now lives in Pawleys Island, will be our guest of honor.

To commemorate the tradition, “Ode to the Sock Burners” was composed by Jefferson Holland of Annapolis in 1995. The ode is read every year when the socks are lit at coastal parties.

Here is our Georgetown version:

Them Georgetown boys got an odd tradition
When the sun sinks to its Equinox position.
They build a little fire down along the docks,
They doff their shoes, and they burn their winter socks.

Yes, they burn their socks at the Equinox.
You might think that’s peculiar, but I think it’s not.
See, they’re the same socks they put on last fall,
And never took ‘em off to wash ‘em, not at all…

So, they burn their socks at the Equinox
In a little ol’ fire burning nice and hot.
Some think incineration is the only solution,
‘Cause washin’ ‘em contributes to Sampit pollution.

Through the spring and the summer and into the fall,
They go around not wearin’ any socks at all,
Just stinky bare feet stuck in old deck shoes,
Whether out on the water or sippin’ a brew.

So if you sail into the Harbor on the 23rd of March,
And you smell Limburger sautéed with laundry starch,
You’ll know you’re downwind of the Georgetown docks,
Where they’re burning their socks for the Equinox.

29th Annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show @ South Carolina Maritime Museum
Oct 20 @ 11:00 pm – Oct 21 @ 4:00 pm

The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show – always held on the third weekend in October – features one of the Southeast’s best wooden boat exhibits with more than 130 wooden boats displayed on land and water, children’s model boatbuilding, knot tying, maritime art and crafts, food and music. A special attraction is Saturday’s Wooden Boat Challenge when teams of two race to build a rowing skiff within a 4-hour time limit and then test their boats for seaworthiness in a rowing relay on the Sampit River. Sunday is a fun-filled family oriented day that includes a Cardboard Boat Regatta, and an Opti Pram Regatta. Check our schedule of events for updates and be sure to book your stay at HammockCoast.com.

The Wooden Boat Show takes place on the waterfront and along Front Street in Historic Downtown Georgetown. The Show is produced by the Harbor Historical Association, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Proceeds will benefit the South Carolina Maritime Museum.
